Afin de r\u00e9pondre aux enjeux r\u00e9glementaires et \u00e9cologiques de tri des biod\u00e9chets, la Communaut\u00e9 d\u2019Agglom\u00e9ration de La Rochelle se dote d\u2019un nouvel \u00e9quipement pour remplacer l\u2019Unit\u00e9 de compostage. Le chantier s\u2019ach\u00e8vera en f\u00e9vrier 2026. La collectivit\u00e9 investit 17,8 millions d\u2019euros pour passer d\u2019un site en plein air de compostage d\u2019une partie seulement des d\u00e9chets verts \u00e0 un site sous b\u00e2timent de compostage de l\u2019ensemble des biod\u00e9chets.<br \/>\nL\u2019Unit\u00e9 de compostage de P\u00e9rigny, qui est d\u00e9sormais ferm\u00e9e au public depuis le mois de mai, a \u00e9t\u00e9 construite en 2000 pour r\u00e9pondre au traitement des d\u00e9chets verts. Elle re\u00e7oit pr\u00e8s de 20 000 tonnes d\u2019herbe de tonte, de branchages et de feuilles par an, et permet d\u2019en transformer 8 \u00e0 9 000 en compost. L\u2019exc\u00e9dent est envoy\u00e9 vers d\u2019autres centres de compostage du d\u00e9partement. Le Centre de valorisation organique pourra traiter 26 000 tonnes de biod\u00e9chets par an, correspondant aux besoins estim\u00e9s sur le territoire : 20 000 tonnes de d\u00e9chets verts et 6 000 tonnes de d\u00e9chets alimentaires. Le site actuel de 25 800 m\u00e8tres carr\u00e9s sera \u00e9tendu de 12 000 m\u00e8tres carr\u00e9s.<br \/>\nDans l\u2019actuelle Unit\u00e9 de compostage, les phases de broyage, fermentation, maturation et tamisage sont r\u00e9alis\u00e9es \u00e0 l\u2019air libre. Le broyage n\u00e9cessite un apport important d\u2019eau. Le brassage, pour a\u00e9rer le m\u00e9lange pendant la fermentation, est m\u00e9canique. L\u2019ensemble du cycle dure 5 mois. Le Centre de valorisation organique pr\u00e9sentera des performances environnementales et \u00e9nerg\u00e9tiques nettement sup\u00e9rieures. La transformation des d\u00e9chets sera r\u00e9alis\u00e9e sous b\u00e2timents et tunnels munis d\u2019un syst\u00e8me de filtration des poussi\u00e8res, gaz et odeurs. Elle sera automatis\u00e9e avec insufflation d\u2019air et arrosage maitris\u00e9 pendant la phase de fermentation. Le temps de compostage sera r\u00e9duit de moiti\u00e9.<br \/>\n\u00c0 noter \u00e9galement que les conditions de travail et de s\u00e9curit\u00e9 des agents seront consid\u00e9rablement am\u00e9lior\u00e9es, ainsi que le confort des riverains.
